Mulch is any material spread over the soil surface to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, suppress weeds, prevent erosion, and improve soil health as it decomposes. Common mulch types include shredded bark, wood chips, straw, compost, rubber mulch, and decorative stone — each with different depths, coverage rates, and aesthetic applications.
The calculation is straightforward: Volume = Area × Depth. For a rectangular bed this is Length × Width × Depth; for circular areas it is π × r² × Depth. The resulting volume in cubic feet is then converted to the common purchase unit — cubic yards (divide by 27) for bulk delivery, or number of bags for bagged mulch. The standard recommended depth for organic mulch is 2–4 inches — 2 inches for annual application top-ups and 3–4 inches for new installations. Applying mulch too deeply (more than 4–6 inches) can cause root rot, deprive roots of oxygen, and create habitat for pests.
When ordering, always add a 10% waste factor to the calculated volume to account for settling (organic mulch typically compacts 20–30% over its first season), irregular bed shapes, and overflow during application. Bulk mulch is cost-effective for large areas — typically $25–$50 per cubic yard delivered — while bagged mulch ($5–$10 for a 2 cubic foot bag) is practical for small beds and areas without drive access.
