Frequently Asked Questions
The healthy BMI range of 18.5–24.9 translates to a weight range for any given height. This is the most commonly used clinical definition of a healthy weight, though it does not account for muscle mass, age, or ethnicity.
The Devine formula (1974) calculates ideal body weight (IBW) from height alone. It was originally developed for drug dosing calculations in medicine. It provides a single target rather than a range, adjusted for gender.
Body frame size (determined by wrist circumference or elbow breadth) adjusts the Devine IBW by ±10%. A small-framed person has a lower ideal weight; a large-framed person has a higher one, reflecting differences in bone density and muscle mass.
BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle, and has known limitations for older adults, athletes, and some ethnic groups. Asian populations may benefit from lower BMI cut-offs, while muscular athletes can have high BMI with normal body fat.
Encircle your wrist with your thumb and middle finger. If they overlap, you have a small frame. If they just touch, medium. If they do not touch, large. Alternatively, elbow breadth (measured with a calliper) is a clinical standard.
