A deck calculator estimates the materials required to build a residential deck — including decking boards, floor joists, support posts, and concrete footing bags — based on the deck's dimensions, board specifications, and structural spacing requirements. Accurate material estimates prevent costly mid-project shortages and reduce waste from over-ordering, which is especially important given the significant cost differences between pressure-treated lumber, cedar, and composite decking.

The calculation works from the ground up: deck board count is determined by dividing the deck width by the pitch (board width plus gap), adding a 10% waste factor for cuts and defects. Floor joists are calculated from the span between ledger and beam at the selected on-centre interval (typically 16" OC for 5/4 lumber). Posts are arranged in a grid defined by post spacing in both directions, with two concrete bags per post as the standard footing specification for most residential frost depths.

Material selection is the single largest variable in deck cost. Pressure-treated lumber (~$1.20/lf) is the most economical choice, treated against rot and insects, but requires periodic sealing and greys over time. Cedar (~$2.50/lf) offers natural rot resistance and a warm aesthetic with less maintenance. Composite decking (~$3.50+/lf) carries the highest upfront cost but offers a 25–30+ year lifespan with minimal maintenance, often making it the lowest total-cost option over a 30-year horizon.

5.5 is the actual (dressed) width of a standard 2×6 deck board (nominal 6). 5/4×6 decking has an actual width of 5.5 as well. Always use actual dimensions, not nominal, for accurate calculations.

Using nominal board dimensions
A 2×6 board is 1.5"×5.5" actual — calculating area with nominal sizes produces a 9–18% undercount.
